Yoga Nidra: (The Psychic Sleep) Its Advantages and Applications


In the modern scenario, human life has become very fast, hectic and demanding. The present lifestyle demands adjustment on the part of the individual. Each of us, as per our coping resources, tries to adjust in this changing world. Some adjust by becoming overactive and others by withdrawing from the situation. When we fail to make a proper adjustment according to the demands of the situation, a state of negative stress or distress develops in our personality, which gives rise to mental or psychological problems. In most people the mind always remains in a state of arousal and tension. Yoga nidra, as a technique of pratyahara, not only provides relaxation to the body and mind but also has a number of benefits.Yoga nidra is one of the practices of pratyahara where the awareness is internalized. Literally, yoga nidra means 'psychic sleep' i.e. sleep with full awareness. In the practice of yoga nidra the body sleeps but the mind remains awake listening to the instructions. In psychology, the state achieved in yoga nidra is termed the hypnogogic state, a state between sleep and wakefulness. Yoga nidra has its origin in the ancient tantric practice called nyasa.



Stages of Yoga Nidra

The practice of yoga nidra is divided into the following stages:
1. Preparation: Yoga nidra is performed in the posture of shavasana, with the eyes closed. In this stage, initial relaxation of the body and mind is induced by the awareness of stillness, comfort, posture, position, breath, and listening to the external sounds with the attitude of a witness.


2. Sankalpa: When the body and mind are relaxed, then the practitioner is instructed to take a resolve according to his or her own wish. The sankalpa should be short, clear and positive. The practitioner repeats the selected sankalpa three times mentally, with full determination, conviction and confidence.
3. Rotation of consciousness: In the third stage, the awareness is rotated around the different body parts in a systematic and organized manner. The practitioner is instructed to remain aware, to listen to the instructions and to move the mind very rapidly according to the instructions without making any physical movements. The rotation of awareness in yoga nidra follows a definite sequence: right side of the body, beginning with the right hand thumb and ending with the little toe of the right foot; left side of the body, from the left hand thumb to the little toe of the left foot; back of the body, from the heels to the back of the head; and lastly the front of the body, from the forehead and individual facial features to the legs.
4. Breath awareness: In this stage, one simply becomes aware of the natural breath without making an attempt to change the flow of the breath. One may become aware of the breath by watching it in the nostrils, chest, and abdomen, or in the passage between the navel and the throat. The practitioner becomes aware of each incoming and outgoing breath by counting them mentally.
5. Opposite feelings and sensations: In this stage, the physical or emotional sensations are recalled, intensified and experienced fully. Usually this is practised with pairs of opposite feelings or sensations like heat and cold, heaviness and lightness, pain and pleasure, love and hate, and so on.
6. Visualization: In the stage of visualization, the awareness is taken to the dark space in front of the closed eyes, referred to as chidakasha in yogic terminology. The practitioner is then instructed to visualize some objects, stories or situations in the chidakasha.
7. Sankalpa: Once again the sankalpa, taken in stage two, is repeated mentally three times in this stage with full dedication, faith and optimism. 8. Ending the practice: Before ending the session of yoga nidra, slowly the awareness is externalized by asking the practitioner to become aware of the external sounds, objects and persons. They are asked then to slowly move the body parts and to stretch the body.

The mind has three gunas or qualities horn of nature: sattwa or light, bliss and goodness; rajas or passion and motion; and tamas or inertia and darkness. here are three vrittis or modifications of the mind corresponding to the three gunas. Shanta vritti or peace, equilibrium and balance come from sattwa guna. Ghora vritti or anger manifests from rajo guna; and moodha vritti or carelessness, laziness and drowsiness comes from tamo guna.

Characteristics of sattwa guna
Sattwa guna is purity. It is prakasha, illumination and light. Sattwa guna is a force favourable for the attainment of liberation. Divine qualities such as fearlessness and purity of heart confer liberation on one. The effect of sattwa guna is that it brings about an enquiry or search for Truth, and discrimination between sat and asat, what is real and what is unreal.

A sattwic mind is always steady. It finds delight internally. A contented person sticks to one place indefinitely. He keeps friendship with people for a long, long time. He understands the inner meaning of the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Vasishtha. He lives without any kind of dissatisfaction on simple food and drink all his life.

During sattwic moments, when pure sattwa is predominant in the mind, you are in touch with the divine source owing to the purity of the mind-mirror. You have inspiration and compose beautiful poetry. You should record these inspired writings in a notebook and preserve them.

Sattwapatti is a state wherein the mind is full of purity. There is purity of thought and heart. It is the fourth step in the attainment of knowledge, jnana.

Characteristics of rajo guna

Rajo guna is a hostile force and pulls one down into samsara or worldly life through repeated births and deaths. Vices like hypocrisy, arrogance and anger drag you down into hell. A mind endowed with sattwa guna will make a person serene and calm, while a mind characterised by rajo guna makes you restless. It does not allow you to sit idle; it forces you to work.

The rajasic mind always wants variety and new sensations. For a while it likes certain persons, objects and places, but after some time it becomes disgusted with them and wishes to have new company, different foods, new books to read and new places to see. It finds pleasure in sightseeing.

The mind of the rajasic person always wants company and conversation. These are the two defects which distract the mind. Avoid bad company. Live alone and observe silence. You will have peace of mind. Be careful in the selection of your companions. Most of the misery comes from bad company. You will rarely find a good, sincere friend. Never take a friend into your close confidence without testing him for a long time. There is no company or talk in Brahman, the ultimate consciousness, which is detached and soundless.

The rajasic mind has a tendency to look into the defects of others. It also remembers the errors and bad deeds of others and easily forgets their good actions. These two tendencies intensify hatred and cause frequent disturbance in the mind.

A mind which is devoid of sattwa guna will not consider the happiness of others as its own and will therefore be ever agitated. As it has no complacency to rejoice at the virtues of others, there will be no internal contentment. As it does not consider the suffering of others as its own, there will arise no compassion for them.

It is the rajasic mind that splits, separates, divides and deceptively shows plurality. The sun is one, the moon is one and ether is one. The idea behind all languages is one. The feeling of sincerity is one. There is no inside or outside here. Husband and wife become one at heart. Intimate friends are one at heart. Matter is one, energy is one, the sattwic mind is one. A sattwic mind unifies. Cosmic mahat is one. Karma, the law of cause and effect, is one. Dharma or righteous is one. Religion is one. Truth is one. Brahman is one. It is one without a second.

Importance of sattwa guna
Real peace of mind does not come from outside. It arises in the mind when the mind is controlled and when the thoughts are checked. You must put forth great effort to check passion and other desires. Only then will your aptitude for restless activity be subdued, will you be at rest and will your thoughts be stilled. Therefore, develop sattwa guna by means of japa or repetition of the name of the Lord, through vichara or self-enquiry, satsang or being in the company of devotees of God, dhyana or meditation, mitahara or light sattwic food, tapas or austerity and swadhyaya or study of the scriptures.

An ordinary worldly-minded person can hardly hear the inner voice of the atma. He cannot have pure thoughts or enquire into the nature of the Self. Every pure thought emanates from a sattwic buddhi or pure intellect. In the case of a worldly person, all thoughts proceed from the mind only. One who does nishkama karma yoga, selfless service, and has purity of mind begins to entertain holy thoughts of God and meditation.

Generally, the mind raises various sorts of curious, fantastic thoughts. It deludes all. It may pretend to engage in self-enquiry, but when it comes to actual practice, it will do nothing. If there is a strong determination in you to concentrate, and if you do steady practice for months, and if the longing for the vision of God or Self-realization becomes keen and acute, only then can you be sure that these thoughts proceed from a pure intellect.

All sadhana or spiritual practices aim at the development of sattwa guna and the attainment of a pure, strong, irresistible will, which brings about the removal of ignorance and, eventually, entry into the state of Satchidananda, truth, consciousness and bliss. Increase of sattwa guna and a pure and determined will pave a long way in the attainment of success in God-realization.

Characteristics of the pure mind
A spiritual aspirant tries to develop the mind as a whole in order to acquire all the sattwic virtues. A pure mind likes solitude, silence, simple living, high thinking, philosophical discussions, studying spiritual books, meditation and satsang. A stainless mind can be judged by one's speech, face and eyes. Through one's expression an opinion may be formed as to whether a person has a stainless mind or not. Higher desires, noble aspirations, lofty ideals, true spiritual feelings, mercy, sympathy, pure unselfish love, devotion, self-inquiry, inspiration, genius - all these come from the higher, pure mind. The pure mind is Brahman itself, which is an embodiment of absolute purity.

A cyst is a closed sac having a distinct membrane and division on the nearby tissue. It may contain air, fluids, or semi-solid material.Most chronic swellings, including cysts and tumors, are called Accumulations. Benign accumulations generally occur because of poor flow and excess damp (fluids). Other interior conditions, such as heat or cold, can contribute to the nature of these accumulations.The most common types of Ovarian cysts are just fluid-filled follicles that did not rupture during ovulation to release the egg. Termed functional cysts, they usually go away within the menstrual cycle and cause no further problems. Occasionally a functional cyst can grow and then rupture causing intense abdominal pain until the fluid contents of the cyst are reabsorbed by the body.

Cysts can occur anywhere in the body; however, some of the more common ones are listed here:

* Sebaceous cyst
* Paratubal cyst
* Vocal fold cyst
* Bronchial cyst

Causes of a cyst -


* Cysts can appear due to various reasons in the body, namely;
* When the flow of fluid is stopped due to some reasons
* Infections of any kind
* Tumors
* In case the patient is suffering from chronic inflammatory condition
* If the cyst is passed on genetically
* Some congenial defect in the development of the organs when the baby is still in the embryo

A cyst can take the form of a lump. It appears just under the skin and can be seen and felt. Cyst in breast can be felt when you touch the affected area with your hands.Cyst can occur in any part of the body, for example, in the breast, ovaries, behind the knees, in joints of the body, on the eyelid, near the mouth of the vagina, on the skin glands, in the brain or in the kidneys. Most of the cysts are not harmful, but a few may be cancerous or may be the reason of some infection. When you see a lump on your skin, then it is better to consult your doctor for accurate diagnosis.

The examination of cysts cannot be done without expert help, when it occurs in the internal organs such as the kidneys or liver. There may not be any symptoms and cannot be detected by the patient without medical help. These cysts can be identified with the help of x-ray, ultrasound, computerized tomography or CAT Scan, and magnetic resonance imaging or MRI depending on the location of the cysts.

Symptoms of ovarian tumors and cysts are generally painless in most women and are accompanied by conditions like enlargement of abdomen, dislocation of uterus, Leucorrhea, feverishness and dropsy. Treatment of the Ovarian Tumors and Cysts by Magnetic Therapy is also effective. North poles of the magnets should be applied bilaterally a little below the navel for 20 to 30 minutes once daily. Mixed magnetized water should also be taken four times daily. This application is also suitable against any other disease of ovaries like ovaritis, abscesses, induration (hardening) and atrophy.

An ovarian cyst is a sac filled with liquid or semi-liquid material arising in an ovary. The number of diagnoses of ovarian cysts has increased with the widespread implementation of regular physical examinations and ultrasound technology. The finding of an ovarian cyst causes considerable anxiety for women because of the fear of malignancy, but the vast majority of ovarian cysts are benign.

Each month, normally functioning ovaries develop small cysts called Graafian follicles. At mid cycle, a single dominant follicle up to 2.8 cm in diameter releases a mature oocyte. The ruptured follicle becomes the corpus luteum, which, at maturity, is a 1.5- to 2-cm structure with a cystic center. In the absence of fertilization of the oocyte, it undergoes progressive fibrosis and shrinkage. If fertilization occurs, the corpus luteum initially enlarges and then gradually decreases in size during pregnancy.

Ovarian tumors and cysts arising in the normal process of ovulation are called functional cysts and are always benign. They may be follicular and luteal, sometimes called theca-lutein cysts. These cysts can be stimulated by gonadotropins, including follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Multiple functional cysts can occur as a result of excessive gonadotropin stimulation or sensitivity. In gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (hydatidiform mole and choriocarcinoma) and rarely in multiple and diabetic pregnancy, hCG causes a condition called hyperreactio luteinalis. In patients being treated for infertility, ovulation induction with gonadotropins (FSH and luteinizing hormone [LH]), and rarely clomiphene citrate, may lead to ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, especially if accompanied by hCG administration.

PCOD (Poly Cystic Ovarian Disease) is a health condition that affects women’s menstrual cycles. It also affects their fertility, production of insulin, heart functioning, condition of the blood vessels and, finally, their whole appearance. Women suffering from PCOD (Poly Cystic Ovarian Disease) normally exhibit the following characteristics:

* They have abnormal levels of male hormones. These are also called androgens

* Their menstrual cycles are irregular or absent

* They usually develop a number of small cysts (fluid-filled sacs) in the ovaries. Alternately, some women don’t develop cysts but still suffer from PCOD.

Medicines like Triphala-Guggulu, Punarnavadi-Guggulu, Mahamanjishthadi-Qadha, Chandraprabha-Vati, Ashokarishta, Dashmoolarishta, Kuber-Vati, Kanchnar-Guggulu, Deodar (Cedrus deodara), Ashoka (Saraca indica), Varun (Crataeva nurvala) and Latakaranj (Caesalpinia crista) are used to treat ovarian tumours and cysts.

`Rakta` dhatu (tissue) are useful to treat this condition. These medicines include Patol (Tricosanthe dioica), Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Patha (Cissampelos pareira), and Musta (Cyperus rotundus). Medicines like Kanchnaar-Guggulu and Mahamanjishthadi-Qadha are used in high doses to check the spread of the disease locally or to other parts of the body. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Suvarna-Parpati, Suvarna-Sutshekhar-Ras, Suvarna-Raj-Vangeshwar-Ras, Trivanga-Bhasma, Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Suvarna-Bhasma and Heerak-Bhasma are used to improve the immune condition of the body so that this disease can be prevented. To prevent or reduce side effects from conventional therapy, medicines like Laxmi-Vilas-Ras, Ashwagandha, Shrung-Bhasma, Shankh-Vati and Laghu-Sutshekhar-Ras are also used.

Thus, Ayurvedic medicines can be used as additional therapy to modern, conventional treatment of ovarian tumours and cysts to bring about a faster response and to prevent recurrence, thus improving the quality of life and overall survival of the patient. It is significant to note that all such patients should be under the regular care and supervision of an Oncology team. Most ovarian cysts in women of childbearing age are follicular cysts (functional cysts) that withdraw naturally in one to three months. Although they can burst (usually without ill effects), they rarely cause symptoms. They are benevolent and have no real medical effect. They may be diagnosed coincidentally during a pelvic examination in women who do not have any related symptoms. All women have follicular cysts at some point that usually go unnoticed.
